Snow is one of the main reasons families from the Gulf visit Georgia in winter. The good news: you do not need to fly far into the mountains. The snowy Caucasus starts about two hours north of Tbilisi, and with your own driver you can go up for the day and be back in the city for dinner.
When is there snow in Georgia?
Winter runs from December to February. In Tbilisi the days stay around 7 to 8°C with nights near 0°C, and snow in the city itself is not reliable. For real snow, go up to the mountains: Kazbegi is below freezing and snowy in winter, and the ski season in Gudauri usually runs from December to April. See Georgia weather by month for the full picture.
Where to see snow
- Gudauri: Georgia's best-known ski resort, about 120 km north of Tbilisi (roughly 2 hours) on the Georgian Military Road. Good for skiing, snowboarding and simply playing in the snow. On the way you pass the Zhinvali Reservoir and Ananuri Fortress.
- Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): further along the same road, with the famous view of Gergeti Trinity Church under Mount Kazbek. In deep winter the last stretch up to the church can be icy, and your driver will tell you on the day what is possible.
- Bakuriani: a ski resort in the Borjomi area, popular with families. It fits well into a longer trip that includes Borjomi: see Borjomi, Bakuriani & Vardzia.
Mountain roads in winter
The road to Gudauri and Kazbegi crosses the Jvari Pass. After heavy snowfall it can close for a few hours or longer until it is cleared. We check the conditions before we leave, and because changes to your plan on the way are free, we can switch to another day or another place if the pass is closed.
What to pack
Warm layers, a waterproof jacket, gloves, a hat and waterproof boots with a good grip. Children get cold quickly in the snow, so bring spare socks and gloves. You can rent ski equipment in the resorts.
