Clean air, mineral water and a cave city
Borjomi is famous across the region for its mineral water, and the town still feels like an old spa resort. The central park follows a river through pine forest, with springs you can drink from and a cable car up the hill.
Half an hour higher up is Bakuriani, a relaxed ski resort that is lovely for families. Further south are two highlights that many visitors miss: Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia, a 12th-century monastery carved into a cliff.

Likani Palace
The former summer residence of the Romanov family, a grand palace in a riverside park. It can usually be seen from the outside.
Bakuriani
A family-friendly mountain resort with ski slopes in winter and forest walks, horse riding and fresh air in summer.
Rabati Castle
A large restored castle complex where a church, a mosque with a golden dome, towers and gardens stand side by side.
Vardzia Cave City
A 12th-century cave monastery from the time of Queen Tamar, with hundreds of rooms, tunnels and a church carved into the rock.
How a day with us looks
- 08:30 — Pickup in Tbilisi and drive west along the highway.
- 11:00 — Borjomi Central Park: taste the warm mineral spring and take the cable car.
- 12:30 — Lunch in Borjomi.
- 14:00 — Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe, with its restored mosque, towers and gardens.
- 16:00 — Vardzia cave city, carved into the cliff over the Mtkvari river.
- 18:00 — Night in Borjomi or Akhaltsikhe, or the long drive back to Tbilisi.
Good to know
- Borjomi water is naturally salty and fizzy. Try it straight from the spring in the park.
- Vardzia has many steps and tunnels. Wear good shoes and bring water.
- Bakuriani is gentler and quieter than Gudauri, which makes it a great choice for kids learning to ski.
- Doing Borjomi and Vardzia in one day from Tbilisi is possible but long. Spending one night makes it much more enjoyable.
