Why Kakheti is worth a day (or two)
Kakheti is Georgia's wine country, but you do not have to drink to love it. The region is full of history, generous food and some of the widest views in the country, with the Alazani Valley stretching out to a wall of snowy peaks.
Sighnaghi is the star: a little town of red roofs and old stone walls on a hill. From there we can take you to monasteries, a royal fortress and a poet's garden estate, and plan the day around your interests.

Sighnaghi Town Walls
18th-century walls with more than 20 towers wrap around the town. Walk along the top for a view across the whole Alazani Valley.
Bodbe Monastery
A calm convent among cypress trees and flower gardens, where Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia, is buried.
Telavi
The main town of Kakheti, with a royal palace, a lively market and a plane tree said to be about 900 years old.
Alaverdi Monastery
An 11th-century cathedral rising over the vineyards, for centuries one of the tallest churches in Georgia.
Tsinandali Estate
The home of 19th-century poet Alexander Chavchavadze, with a museum, a large English-style park and an old cellar.
Gremi Citadel
A 16th-century royal fortress and church on a hill, all that remains of the old capital of the Kakheti kingdom. Climb the tower for the view.
Nekresi Monastery
One of the oldest Christian sites in Georgia, hidden in the forest above the valley. A short shuttle or a steep walk takes you up.
How a day with us looks
- 09:00 — Pickup in Tbilisi and drive east through the countryside.
- 11:00 — Sighnaghi: walk along the town walls and enjoy the view of the Alazani Valley.
- 12:30 — Bodbe Monastery, just 2 km away, with its peaceful gardens.
- 13:30 — Lunch with Kakhetian specialities: mtsvadi (grilled meat), fresh bread and local cheese.
- 15:00 — Choose one: Tsinandali Estate, Gremi Citadel or a wine tasting.
- 17:00 — Drive back to Tbilisi.
Good to know
- Wine tastings are always optional. There is plenty for non-drinkers: fresh fruit, churchkhela (a sweet made of nuts and grape juice) and home-made juices.
- The fastest way combines Sighnaghi and Telavi in one long day. For a relaxed trip, stay a night in Sighnaghi.
- Kakheti is warmer and drier than the mountains. Bring a hat and water in summer.
- Many local restaurants serve lamb and chicken, and we can ask for dishes without pork.
