Kakheti is Georgia's wine country, but you do not have to drink to love it. The region is full of history, generous food and some of the widest views in the country, with the Alazani Valley stretching out to a wall of snowy peaks.

18th-century walls with more than 20 towers wrap around the town. Walk along the top for a view across the whole Alazani Valley.

A calm convent among cypress trees and flower gardens, where Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia, is buried.

A 16th-century royal fortress and church on a hill, all that remains of the old capital of the Kakheti kingdom. Climb the tower for the view.

One of the oldest Christian sites in Georgia, hidden in the forest above the valley. A short shuttle or a steep walk takes you up.
