Tbilisi to Batumi: how to get there

Tbilisi and Batumi are the two ends of most Georgian holidays: the old capital in the east, the Black Sea in the west. The drive is about 370 km and takes roughly six hours without stops.

Private car with a driver

The train

A comfortable option if you travel light. The fast train takes around five to six hours and runs daily, but you still need a taxi at each end, and the timetable decides your day. Seats sell out in summer.

Bus and shared minibus

The cheapest way and the least comfortable: around seven hours, fixed departure points, no stops for photos, and little space for luggage.

Flying

There are sometimes domestic flights, but with check-in and airport transfers at both ends the time saved is small, and schedules change with the season.

Make the drive part of the holiday

This is the argument for the car. On the way you can stop at Borjomi for the mineral springs, at Prometheus Cave or Martvili Canyon, or at Gelati Monastery. Most guests add one or two stops and arrive in Batumi in the evening having seen half of western Georgia.
